Did anyone else find this movie uproariously funny?

I just saw the film the other day, and I found large chunks of the film strangely amusing. Between the total misoginism and the double entendre, the film had me rolling on the floor a number of times. Was that just me?

Parts of In A Lonely Place is funny. Like Dixon's interrogation by that cop is pretty amusing and much of the initial interactions between Bogie and Gloria is quite witty. Of course the ending is tragic.

Nicholas Ray never made a pure comedy and his films are essentially humourless save for some jokes and bursts of laughter and release on occasion.

I live for this film. The more I watch it, the more I laugh. I'm so glad I'm not alone. Bogie and Gloria Graham have so many great one liners. This is one of those classic cases where you return to a film, not because you know what's going to happen, but because the actors have become your friends.

No, it wasn't just you. My husband and I watched this and we laughed in some parts as well. Loved when the murdered girl said "bachelorologist" or something to that effect. Funny.

"Fra-gee-lay. That must be Italian."
"Uh, I think that says FRAGILE, dear."

You'll find this movie funnier if you see this...
No, not really

reply

Not particularly. But I did laugh at this line:

Sylvia: I've always been curious to know how a writer works?
Dix: Well, usually in a sitting position.

"rolling on the floor"? Really? A rather extreme reaction, don't you think?

reply

Not "uproariously funny", but the first half is filled with witty one liners. Hardly a moment goes by when Bogart isn't spewing something clever.

I thought the opening scene, when Bogie challenged the "pig" that the actress was married to, was hysterical. I could picture Bogie doing something like that, at the Stork Club or something. I know he got into a brouhaha at El Morocco over a stuffed (toy) panda bear.

I laughed out loud at this (partially paraphrased):

Cop: and while you were looking at his face, what was he doing?
Laurel: He was looking at mine.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...
