Nowhere near as good as High Noon...

but not a bad western. I just can't help compare it to High Noon because of the same central theme to both movies. Whereas The Gunfighter seems a little dated when watched today (i.e, Peck's death scene), High Noon does not. IMO

Sorry but i have to disagree-As a fan of both movies i've always enjoyed this one much more. Two very similar movies in many ways,it has always been accepted that High Noon took a lot of its ideas from The Gunfighter. Both great westerns-it's all a matter of taste.

While I enjoy both films greatly; The Gunfighter edges out High Noon. Pity Grace Kelly wasn't in The Gunfighter!!

Personally, I prefer THE GUNFIGHTER to HIGH NOON.

Thank God Grace Kelly isn't in THE GUNFIGHTER! To me she was one of the weak points in HIGH NOON (and everything she's ever been in).

"High Noon" was too negative, and exemplified cowardice. John Wayne and Howard Hawks made "Rio Bravo" as an anti-"High Noon."

My opinion is that "The Gunfighter" is a superior Western to "High Noon."

As a long time Gary Cooper fan I have to disagree. High Noon dragged on forever. Grace Kelly wasn't as asset in High Noon though Lloyd Bridges and Katy Jurado were excellent in their supporting roles. High Noon is among my least favorite Gary Cooper movies.

The Gunfighter is one of Gregory Peck's finest roles. The movie is seamless and flows. There are never any slow or dull moments. Millard Mitchell was perfect as the ex gunfighter turned Marshal. All in all a great flick. So much better than High Noon.

I agree! "High Noon" plays out like a hokey, unwatchable mess today; especially with the song "Do Not Forsake Me", which dates it even more.

Thumbs Up - The Gunfighter - as the superior film

Thumbs Down - Nigh Noon - as the superior film

I love both of them but I would agree that High Noon is better. It is my favorite western so it would have to be :)

I would agree with those that have said that the Gunfighter is the superior movie of the two. I am a huge fan of westerns and have always thought that High Noon is the most overated movie in the genre.

I think it's better. It's more realistic.
