And why is it surprising? All the Cahiers guys were huge fans of B-movies of the '40s and '50s, especially noirs. Godard used B-noirs as an inspiration for Breathless. Truffaut was inspired by them in many of his films, such as Shoot the Piano Player and The Bride Wore Black.
