PEGGY CUMMINS/GUN CRAZY

First saw this many years ago in Columbus OH at the "CineEvent" convention...I was completely knocked out by Peggy Cummins!! What charisma....as the saying goes, 'the camera loved her'....not since I first saw Louise Brooks have I been so impressed..I read somewhere that Cummins was the original choice for "Forever Amber" and that part of the movie was filmed, then 20th Century Fox decided to give the role to a (very unflatteringly) blonde Linda Darnell!! Has anyone else ever heard about this? or know the reason why Cummins was dumped? she'd have been fantastic as Amber!!!! My guess is that she just wasnt a big enough name to carry the film....our loss!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice hearing from you!!

I first saw this great film tonight and agree that she's great!

I first saw her in "Night of the Demon" and was struck by her beauty, which led me to "Gun Crazy". She was fantastic in this and I'm suprised she didn't become a bigger star. She was absolutely fetching and seductive in her cowboy outfit during her intro at the carnival gun show!! Gorgeous and talented!

reply

I agree 100% She made my mouth water. I wanted to go to bed with her right away. I really liked her teeth!

reply

I'm 35 and have fancied her rotten since I first saw this movie when I was 22.

reply

agreed! is there any other film where she is THIS attractive?

reply

If you think she was gorgeous in this be sure to look up "Moss Rose"
with Ethel Barrymore, she was at the peak of her beauty in this one'
I especially loved her raspy voice...

reply

I have heard of "Moss Rose' but it never seems to be on cable...I will try to get it from Netflix.......how nice to know someone else out there appreciates her!!! You have good taste!!! haha..

Did you ever see the one she was in with Dana Andrews? forget the title, but it was British and was an awful horror movie.......

And I still 'weep' when I think that she could have been the lead in "Forever Amber" but after shooting lots of footage, 20th decided on Linda Darnell - a brunette!! & a blonde wig instead of poor Peggy.....Darnell did a good job, but seeing Peggy in that role would have been incredible!! oh well, that's show biz!!

Do you have any of her movies on DVD? which ones???

Peggy Cummins sizzles onscreen and easily steals every scene in which she appears. She is the archetypal femme fatale, overwhelmingly desirable and a psychopath. Notice how in the late forties, she is the epitomy of female sexuality as opposed to the "stick" girls with fake boobs of today. Not that I have anything against "stick" girls.

You have described pretty much the way I feel about this movie and Peggy!! I thought I was pretty good with words, but you beat me by a mile!!!

Isn't it great that so many people are still discussing these old films; and in particular, this one performer??!! 50 years from now, I have a hard time imagining who and what those future film buffs will be talking about!!!!
Who is around today that would inspire this much 'adulation'...oh I guess there are a few, but very few!!!

Do you have "Gun Crazy' on DVD? or have you seen it recently?

reply

Yeah.....Friday night is "Noir" night around here and I screened "Gun Crazy" from the "Film Noir Collection Vol 1" before coming here to look at any recent posts. I much rather re-watch classics than view most of the crap that is produced today, but then I feel the same way about music.

Glad to see there's someone else out there who thinks the same!!! However, did you know that the scene towards the end, when they are in the hotel room, was added on after they'd completed the film? They had to have a scene showing their remorse, etc.......you know, the Censors were alive and well back then!!! it, however, is the only jarring note in what I consider to be a great film!! Cummins' screen persona just jumped out at you!!! Only a very few ladies on the screen have this 'gift'.....Louise Brooks and Marilyn Monroe had that quality, as did Garbo.......there are many others, but those are the first ones I thought of!!

reply

If she asked me to rob a bank, I'd be serving time. And I'd never drop the dime on her.

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.

reply

Yeah, her shooting intro is great. She looks amazing.

reply

Peggy Cummins is amazingly wonderful in this terrific film. She's a plays a perfect, warm-blooded Bonnie Parker outlaw.

Three cheers for Miss Cummins!

Sure, it might have been a "Hayes Code" thing, but that scene worked for me because Bart at that point has gotten in waaaaaay over his head and he knows it, he never planned on the two people getting killed during the last job.
