It's something you almost only see in the movies. The driver going out the passenger side or the passenger going out the driver side door. It just looks odd.

Also it is safer to slide to the inside(curb side) than to open the door into and step out into traffic.
I remember those bench seats! You could almost lay down your full length on them! Hilarious to see people sliding out of them though in the movies.
shareI had a 1959 Ford pickup truck. It had only one door lock, on the passenger-side (right) door. It also had a bench seat, and the gear shift lever was on the steering column, so there was no obstacle to sliding across. I think the idea was to encourage you to exit on the curb side, rather than stepping out into traffic. If you got out on the left, you'd have to walk around to lock the other door.
