joan bennett sex symbol

they really managed to frump up joan for this role.remember this is the
same sex bomb from "the woman in the window" and "scarlett street" only
five years earlier.

reply

Yes, but still beautiful, no matter how much frumping!

MGM wanted Hedy lamarr for the role and Hedy turned it down for good reasons..number one she was tired playing opposite Tracy, she had made 3 with him) and she was 5 or 6 years younger than Joan Bennett, too young to play Liz Taylors mother...remember a year earlier Hedy played Delilah..that was a real gorgeous woman.

reply

Joan Bennett was absolutely gorgeous in it. She had such an exquisite face and a classy style that are perfect for her character. She was certainly the right one to play the mother of another stunning beauty such as Elizabeth Taylor.

I can't get over how different Joan looked playing "Amy" in the 1933 version of "Little Women" - who could have imagined that nearly 2 decades later she would be playing the mother of Elizabeth Taylor, who also played the role of "Amy" in the 1947 version of "Little Women."

rjbiggs1,

Joan was really great in Scarlet Street and Woman in the Window. She really works well with Edward Robinson.

I love the part where she is explaining to the art critic how long it takes her to make a painting: "Maybe it takes a day, maybe it takes a year. It all depends. It's like falling in love." When Joan said these words, she used the same cadence and inflections as Edward Robinson. Just great.

Joan Bennett was certainly convincing as the mother of Liz Taylor. Even beyond the similar coloring (and Joan was a blonde before changing her whole persona going darkhaired in the early forties), she bore a resemblance that made this a great casting choice.

Except... while Joan at age 40 could well have been Liz Taylor's mother, who was 22 years younger, she did seem rather youngish to be her mother. I guess it's that people tend to marry older now compared to then.

I also think from reading about Bogart and Bacall that Spencer and Kate Hepburn used to socialize with Joan, who was also friends with the Bogarts. So they knew each other (Joan later playing with Bogart in We're No Angels). I agree with others that her greatest role was the stunning performance in Scarlett Street, quite a different role than here. But here she was great, too.

reply

Joan was wonderful and classy as Spencer's suburban wife, and it seems like she loved the opportunity.

Once Joan went brunette, her beauty just popped! And it never went away...not even in Dark Shadows.
