What DVD releases of this exist?

As far as I can see, only two companies have released a DVD of this: Alpha Video and Sinister Cinema. Has anyone been able to compare these two releases? Are there any others?

reply

Mill Creek includes it in their 50-movie "Pure Terror" pack, but it is a very poor print, and it is edited.

When you say it's edited, what do you mean?

I picked up a copy of the Sinister Cinema DVD-R (which supposedly was sourced from a 16mm print, though it's obvious there was at least one generation of analog videotape in-between) and the nude scene had been edited out (where Ann tries to seduce Fallon in his bedroom).

The picture quality is reasonable for an old PD film, though I had to turn the volume up quite high to hear it and even then had trouble making out some of the dialogue. Looking at screenshots people have put online of the Alpha Video DVD, I'm not convinced that both the Alpha and the Sinister Cinema releases weren't sourced from the same master (possibly a videotape made by a TV station for broadcast).

Yes, the nude scene is edited in the Mill Creek version as well. Ann comes out from her hiding place, there's a jump cut and next thing you see, she is lacing up her blouse again.

Scene is intact on the new Vinegar Syndrome dvd, it is just a quick flash.
Pretty racy for 1962 though.

Beat me to it. Just got this DVD today. I think it's safe to say this is the best release so far of this movie quality wise, and I doubt there will ever be a remastered or restored version (do the elements for this movie still even exist? I suspect only prints do). As someone who saw this film on late night tv as a kid (and was creeped out by it) I've always wanted to see it again and this dvd proved far superior to the uploads I'd tried to watch on youtube etc.

Scared the bejesus out of me when I was a tot also. However, after seeing it again after 30 years, the part of the count's wife coming out of her hole and 'putting the moves' on our hero is still quite scary.

The ending was spooky also.

reply

Yeah, as with most of these "packs", it and most of the rest seem edited.
