The original crime?


Someone early on (a reporter, perhaps?) says in the background something on the lines of "...you remember him? He killed that girl (or waitress)..."

But that was the only mention. Did anybody hear it clearer? I wonder what was so terrible that he was dubbed "The Mad Killer", especially since his psychosis seemed centered around his fantasy of being a war hero. I just wonder if there was more back story, with the girl calling him a fake, something like that that got lost on the cutting room floor.
