Criterion Petition!

With "The Furies" coming out in June, let's petition to have Criterion release this, and perhaps "The Tall Target" and "The Black Book," on dvd! Anthony Mann is the most underappreciated director in classic cinema (with the exception of Nicholas Ray on his home turf -- as opposed to overseas where he garners respect).

Devil's Doorway also deserves more recognition than it has obtained. It's not only a well made movie, it also goes beyond the entertainment telling the history of the Western colonization from the point of view of the native peoples, for whom the white man's advance meant a true drama. It's rare to find in the American cinema of that time (and even at the present time) movies like this.

After seeing the Criterion print of The Furies, this deserves a spot too... if not a box set like I mentioned before.

Warnerarchive has this excellent movie for a July 20, 2010 release.

I agree. This film is now in my top 10 westerns list.

I finally saw this excellent overlooked film tonight, along with 'The Tall Target', both which I had taped in crappy SLP speed on VHS back in Sept '08 (I have a backlog of over 150 films recorded off TCM to watch) along with 'Stars in My Crown' (J.Tourneur) and 'One Way Passage', which I'll be watching either this afternoon or later tonight after I've had some sleep.

I have yet to see 'The Furies', but am looking forward to it.

Since 'Devil's Doorway' is an MGM film and I believe that WB has the MGM library (along with RKO's titles), wouldn't it fall into the massive list of titles that Warner Archives is eventually releasing for $20 each direct from their website? It's not in the first batch of 150 titles, though sadly I doubt that's because they've been gearing up to make a great Special Edition dvd of it (highly unlikely). If it's one of those 6,800 or so titles in their neglected library, then at least we should see it on dvd sometime before the Earth crashes into the Sun...

It's on TCM-HD now!

This film surely deserves a proper DVD release, and not a crap DVD-R "from the vault" $20 ripoff release. It's virtually criminal this film is not widely available. Thank goodness I have Verizon FIOS and TCM. Friends just a mile away in the next town are stuck with Comcast and their ridiculous pricing tier for TCM. A very powerful film.

You don't need a Criterion issue. If you don't know already it has just got a
DVD release from Warners in their wonderful Archive Series. A flawless, sharp as a button issue.
