The heroine commits a cold-blooded revenge killing, and at the end they treat her like Queen for a Day! I thought the cop was gonna arrest her at the end, when he says he won't call her a cab, but instead he will have a patrol car drive her ... home! The possibility of arresting her never even entered the picture! Ridiculous ending.

Which cold-blooded revenge killing are you referring to? She is tricked into thinking that Stretch is about to be shot, and so she shoots to save his life.
Nothing cold-blooded about the killing at the end, as he was about to injure (possibly kill) the chief; but one can imagine the brouhaha that would ensue today if a cop killed someone who didn't have a gun, even if armed with another weapon! The cab/police car ride home was a reprise of her first visit to the police when she insisted on taking a cab, then finagling a ride from Jackie, whom she suspected was the killer. I thought it was a good ending, and they didn't just let her sail through the post-murder questioning.
