Who played Professor Hastings?

Over the past few years, IMDb has gradually added many of the unbilled character actors who appeared in Destination Moon, after initially listing only the five named cast members and one or two others. But there's one crucial actor still unnamed and unlisted on their "full cast and crew" page: the man who played Professor Hastings.

We see Hastings a couple of times in the pre-launch sequences -- telling Cargraves that if he can increase the engine thrust a little, they can make the trip in two days instead of four, and later seeing the men off as they jump on the gantry to escape the officer trying to serve the warrant to halt the take-off ("I wish you had room for me on the trip"). But he's heard a lot after the crew gets to the moon -- he's the man they communicate with about their efforts to lighten the ship's weight. And earlier, when Barnes decides to plunge ahead and take off right away, and Cargraves says that they're stuck because working out the ballistics for the trip is a week's work, Barnes asks him, "You think Professor Hastings is pretty good, don't you?" Barnes brightens and replies, "Best in the world." So obviously this is a very important character, and we see or hear him more than most of the other supporting players.

But -- he remains unlisted. The actor looks slightly familiar but I think I'm confusing him with other performers. He also sounds vaguely familiar. But in any case, it's odd that no one has stated who he is.

Anybody know?

Professor Hastings is played by announcer Art Gilmore.

Helo, Dejael -- Are you sure it was Art Gilmore? I'm not disputing it, just wondering where you found the information. I know AG's voice well from the many shorts, trailers, etc., he narrated (often for Warner), and while I hear the resemblance in the voice it's hard to judge, mainly because in DM he's acting as opposed to narrating, which calls for different tones and vocal modulations. I don't recall ever seeing a picture of Gilmore so can't tell based on what the actor looks like.

Thanks for the information!

reply

Yes, absolutely sure. You only see him in one scene, the rest is his voice.
Look him up on Google.

I might do that, but I have no doubt you're right. Thanks again.

But you do see him in two scenes: first, showing Cargraves (seated at a desk) some design specs for the ship, telling him, "If you can increase the ship's escape velocity by just six one-hundredths of a second, you can make the trip in two days instead of four." (I may not remember the number right!) We see him a second time just before the ship takes off, when Cargraves shakes hands with him and Hastings says, "Good-bye, good luck. I wish I could make the trip with you." (He's also seen on the ground television pick-up on Sweeney's control panel a couple of minutes later, running off with the others to take shelter before the take-off.)

Yes, that's right. His voice was all over the place in movies and TV for more than 40 years.
He also had a small part in George Pal's WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE.
