Crockett vs Carson

OK, there appear to be two movies I need to find and re-watch:
Davy Crockett, Indian Scout (1950)
Kit Carson (1940).

I had seen Kit Carson on TV twice. Then the Davy Crockett craze hit, and a movie showed up at the local theater called Davy Crockett. Possibly there was more to the name -- I'm not certain.

My mother kept belaboring the fact that Davy Crockett would not be played by the same actor as the Disney version. I assured her I realized that.
When I came out of the theater complaining that "it wasn't Davy Crockett," she knowingly said that I just didn't understand.

What I understood was that I'd seen it before: it was Kit Carson! They just changed the main character's name!

Now, looking at the entrys for these two movies, I wonder if it was quite the ripoff I thought. Sorry, in 1955 I was 8. Jon Hall and George Montgomery meant nothing to me at the time (Fess Parker: him I could recognize).

Has anybody seen them both? How similar are they?

Actually the two movies are very different in plot, however many of the action scenes from the earlier "Kit Carson" were lifted and used in the Crockett movie.

The Crockett movie was originaly released in 1950, however after Disney and Fess Parker mad so much loot of the Crockett name, the 1950 movie was re-released to theaters for a quick buck.

Yeah, we were all of us very disappointed with this one!
