Ridiculous casting...

Joan Crawford was waaaaay too old at age 45 for the part of the seductive 'girl'.

David Brian though, looks about 50, yet was only 36 when this was made.

His "wife" was played by Edith Evanson, who was 52 and looks like his mother. The scene where Crawford meets her is hysterical because she looks and acts so frail and old.

Even funnier is the notion of Steve Cochran falling for Crawford, but of course her leading men got younger and younger as she got older.

And then there's the overbearing score, the script, the story, the hammy direction by Vincent Sherman.

Unfortunately it's not quite bad enough to be good…but is quite funny in places, for all the wrong reasons.

It's a good noir. It works.
