...cry like a baby near the end when that little boy sobs, "Our daddy's dead!"? Even my dad gets a little misty-eyed when that bit comes up, and I always left the room under the pretense of getting a snack!

Yes that little boy broke my heart in that scene!

I agree. That moment is genuinely heart-breaking and moves me toward (if not to) tears. Young Jimmy Hunt was really very good, and tragically real and affecting in that scene. It's all the more wrenching because it's so out of tone with the rest of this light-hearted film.

I too agree, a very sad ending

My eyes welled up with tears and I almost lost it but somehow I kept it together. I had seen the movie before and knew what was coming but it was still so sad.

I love this movie. It's endearing, heartwarming, and sad.

Me too, I came sooo close to losing it. Despite coming to this board before seeing the movie, I remained unspoiled (I apparently wasn't paying close enough attention) and the whole end came as a huge shock to me and the silence in the house made my eyes well up (that's what got to me more than the actual boy crying).

That's the amazing power of movies! This was made more than sixty five years ago yet it can, in essence, reach this far into the future and affect us as strongly today as it probably affected the audiences in its time.

It should remind us how similar we are; except for sociopaths, we're all cut from the same clothe. We not only understand but can also feel and share in each other's pains and joys; even when those emotions are stirred by fictional characters and/or situations.
