Who Plays Marie Allen's (Eleanor Parker's) Mother?

There's an important scene in the movie where Marie Allen's mother comes into the prison to visit her. The actress playing the mother does a good job, but I can't find her name in the credits.

There is no "Mrs. Allen" -- presumably because the mother has remarried and has a new surname. But the surname is never given in the film, as far as I can tell. I can't find any names in the credits that easily fit.

There is a "Mrs. Warren" but I'm not sure that is the person. This actress looks fairly old (unless she was made up to look old, which is possible), so I'm looking for an actress of at least 55 or maybe older, born in 1895 or earlier. Is it possible the actress wasn't listed in the credits? It seems unlikely, given she has such an important scene -- even if it's here only scene.

Does anyone know for sure, or have a good guess?

Her mother is indeed "Mrs. Warren," and she is played by Queenie Smith. I just watched Caged and recognized the actress from her (also uncredited) role in the 1948 movie The Killers.

It's funny how many memorable roles went uncredited in these old films. Taylor Holmes, who memorably appears in more than one scene as the arrogant senator who refuses to extend any funding to improve the prison, also receives no credit.

Thanks very much. I haven't watched *The Killers* lately, but I'll look for her.

I've put in a request to add the words "- Marie's Mother" to "Mrs. Warren," so that future IMDb users won't have to waste time figuring this one out the way I did. I think IMDb will make the change, because it tends to be less sticky about modifying character names in the "uncredited" section than character names which are actually on the screen credits.

(I've found that in the past, even when character names found *in the screen credits* are *wrong*, IMDb is almost never willing to modify them. In Hitchcock's *The Girl Was Young* (aka *Young and Innocent*, 1937) the screen credits list a character named "Guy" who is never named in the movie. If you didn't already recognize the actor (and most people nowadays wouldn't, because in historical perspective he was a fairly minor actor, George Curzon), you wouldn't have a clue which character "Guy" was in the movie. I correctly identified "Guy" as "Christine's Husband", but they wouldn't change it, even though it would help IMDb readers correctly match the character to the actor, because for some reason the screen credits are sacrosanct. But it seems to make a difference who handles the requests for changes; some IMDb staff go by common sense, whereas others go by the book. So if you, or someone else, wishes to take another shot at changing "Guy" to "Christine's Husband" -- maybe the change will go through, and save some other poor IMDb user the time I wasted trying to identify the character.)

Just FYI, in The Killers, Queenie Smith plays the hotel maid to whom Burt Lancaster wills his money. She is one of the first people interviewed by Edmond O'Brien, and her character is also called Queenie!
