Marilyn dumb blonde roles

I've seen this film and wondered why if she can win an Oscar for playing a dumb blonde, why didn't Marilyn Monroe win one for playing the same type of roles (The Seven Year Itch; Bus Stop; Some Like it Hot) or at least get nominated?

reply

Well, maybe she didn't get it just for playing a dumb blonde, but for how she played the part.

With that in mind, I think Marilyn should definitely have been nominated for Bus Stop. I also wonder how much a star in those days being nominated was dependant on their Studio pushing for them to get a nomination. I wonder if Twentieth Century Fox ever thought to do this for Marilyn.

It's because Holliday is an insanely better actress than Monroe.
It's honestly not even close. It takes about five minutes to realize how much more talented Holliday was than Monroe.

Never seen remotely the kind of comic timing by Monroe that Holliday displays here. And she basically carries the movie which is something I don't really recall Monroe having ever done.

For what it's worth, most people feel Marilyn probably was among the top ten finalists for the Best Actress award for BUS STOP and SOME LIKE IT HOT (she won the comedy Golden Globe for the latter over Doris Day who would go on to be Oscar nominated). BORN YESTERDAY was one of the great Broadway hits of the late 1940's so I can see how that prestige helped it in part at the Oscars and it is unquestionably a superb film with a great performance by Holliday. Perhaps the dramatic moments in Judy's performance helped win over Oscar voters who rarely voted for comedy performances back then.
