Error in IMDb Quote

Christabel Caine Carey: You don't care very much for women, do you?

Gabriel 'Gobby' Broome: My dear girl, apart from painting my major occupation is convincing women that I'm harmless.

What I heard was, "...convincing women's HUSBANDS that I'm harmless."

I loved this movie; loved the script. I really miss the snappy banter of those days, which relied on wit, and not crassness and cursing. I didn't know about an alternate ending until reading about it here. There may be flaws, but I'd rather see a movie with sharply drawn characters and witty script than weepers that rely on maudlin sentiments and cliched writing.

Maybe you can submit a correction to IMDb. They accepted one of my corrections on someone's bio once

It bugged me last week with another film when I saw that Oscar Levant was misquoted in TCM's (or whoever's) closed captioning. In The Barkleys of Broadway he said something like, "...she would go on (stage) with two broken legs." It was transcribed as "...she would go home with two broken legs," which didn't make sense in the context of the conversation. But I digress ;)

Good suggestion; thank you. I'm not sure where to submit it. Do you have a handy address? I love the fact that you're even referring to Oscar Levant! Hard to get across to the young'n's these days what true wit and talent were...

I scrolled down to the bottom of the quotes page and found an "Edit page" button. I don't know if it shows up on your browser, though, since apparently IMDb works differently on different browsers (there's a lot of stuff I can't do on IMDb with my old browser anymore ).

It's so nice to meet another Oscar Levant fan! I'm currently trying to see/hear everything of his that I can. I first saw him a couple of years ago while watching Rhapsody in Blue and right after he began speaking I was completely fascinated by him.

Thank you so much--I've never been in that part of the site before. I submitted my correction. BTW, I hate to sound dumb after so many years on IMDb, but what's Permalink, as opposed to Reply?

Ever see Oscar Levant in "The Band Wagon," with Fred Astaire and Nanette Fabray? It's great fun, and a perfect script for Levant! Cheers!

reply

No problem!

Permalink is a link to a specific post, for example this is a link to your post that I'm responding to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042275/board/nest/223927882?d=223929856#2 23929856. I guess there's various reasons why people use it. Some people use it in other threads/boards to show to others who may need information in a specific post. I often copy and paste them into my personal files in case I need to reference them later. There are no dumb questions, only dumb answers. I think that's how the saying goes ;)

I got to see "The Band Wagon" earlier this month and loved it! I still record things on VHS. Coincidentally I was looking for "The Band Wagon" yesterday so I could watch it again and couldn't find it. I know I labeled it and put it near the TV, so it's a mystery where it went.

Thank you for your kind and informative reply about Permalink; much appreciated.

I've discovered that Netflix has "The Band Wagon," but only on DVD (not streaming); I looked for it on YouTube, but there are only (wonderful) dance segments there. Looking on the bright side, it is something that comes around every so often on TV channels such as TCM. I do hope you find your tape, but I'm sure we haven't seen the last of it! Another idea: Maybe you can get it at your local library? Most libraries have mostly DVDs, though, now, not VHS tapes.

Hope that's helpful, and (re-)enjoy The Band Wagon!

That is helpful, thank you!
