He is incredibly handsome. It is worth all the dreck just to see him. Actually I enjoyed the story pretty well too. It is hard to believe that anyone as virile as he is would fall so hard for the pale and weak Joan Fontaine character. We are supposed to accept that she is a femme fatale. Mel Ferrer is well cast as the opportunistic artist but Zachary Scott? He is creepy imho.
Robert Ryan indeed! Hollywood kept making him play dark parts or the villian, when as he once observed, he could have done many of the parts Gregory Peck got. Ryan was so good.

Don't know about Ryan doing the Peck parts - not that his acting ability is in doubt, but there's something dangerous and devilish about Ryan even when he plays a "good guy" while Peck is this straight-forward, square-jawed righteousness personified. Very different types.

Yes, Ryan was one of the best and most underestimated of that era. I can understand you finding Zachary Scott creepy but I rather like him. In the few of his films in my collection (including also Ruthless and Flamingo Road) I find he dominates the screen whenever he's in the picture. The trouble with Joan Fontaine, whom I basically like, is that she was at her best playing frightened mousey creatures (as in Rebecca and Suspicion) and it absolutely did not suit her to try and be smart and sophisticated. That should always have been left to her sister Olivia de Havilland.
