The Black Rose 1950's movie with Tyrone Power and Orson Welles
Why this 1950's movie is not abailable on VHS or DVD?

reply

I have no idea...It certainly should be. It was one of Ty's best, and it's even in color. Alas, "Prince of Foxes" isn't in color, and should have been. But Darryl Zanuck was mad at Power for stealing Linda Christian away from him, so rumor has it.

The movie was finally on Turners Classic movies (I have writing requesting it) BUT my TIVO quit the movie in the last 3 minutes! grrrrrrrrr Just when the Black Rose was coming into the room.

BUT the good thing is if it was on Sat it will be on again. The last time I saw it was about 12 yrs ago on AMC. I taped it then but the tape was bad..so a portion was bad and the transmission not as good as yesterday.

However, the film looks like it needs to be restored because some of the music in the opening is wavy but I DID GET TO VIEW IT AGAIN!!!!

Come on Hollywood. Get some of these excellent movies on DVD and forget all the terrible things that are going on DVD today!

That's why I was looking here!

It should really come out on DVD. I remember it well and fondly, especially Orson Welles as the Mongol warlord. The book is better but this is a fun hollywood romp.

The Black Rose is now available on DVD/VHS from Learmedia in Canada. Apparently, they specialize in productions with no active copyright, and some other rare or unusual titles.

Check out http://www.learmedia.ca/product_info.php/products_id/1218.

I just got my DVD copy a few days ago, and I have to say, the quality is mixed. There are no chapter divisions, no subtitles and no extras at all. The movie didn't even load automatically -- I wondered what was up, then finally pushed the "Menu" button and the one-chapter "menu" popped up. Color saturation is okay, with some scenes better than others. Maybe that's just what you expect with a 56 year old print. Overall resolution & detail seems to be about that of a VHS recorded at 6 hour speed.

Well, at least I have a DVD copy now. If you're interested, contact Learmedia at http://www.learmedia.ca/index.php.
