Dirty B&W Character

This film ... from 1950 ... has this "dirty black & white" quality to it. I find this quality or character in many other films ... one that comes to mind is "Morituri" from 1965. I do not think is caused by bad camera technology (15 years between the 2 films) but is a effect chosen by the Director. I do understand that Berlin in 1948 and being on a steamship 1944 where dirty affairs but I do not like this effect ... said the guy with a 2016 color HD view of the world.

BTW ... there are many B&W films that do not look like this.
