Did anyone else thought Doll...

Looked like she was planning to sell the Doc out for the reward money? In that scene with the 3 of them at her place looking at the jewels before they parted, the look on her face... as if she was thinking of going to the police, collect the reward money and run away with Dix. Anyone else had that feeling?

reply

Doll may have been the most incorruptible person in the film. So I didn't get that nuance. However, no doubt she would have done anything for Dix.

reply

No way.

Doll wanted Dix.

reply

She might have.

One thing I'm convinced of - if the lawyer's sidekick hadn't been murdered, he would have taken off with all the jewels, leaving nothing for the lawyer (and the others).

Agreed. In many ways Bannom is the most devious of them all. He possesses the intelligence of Doc and Emmerich, the willingness to kill anyone in his way, like Dix, and the self-centered nature of Cobby. He's definitely not a team player, and will jump at the chance to screw over his partner.

Had Dix not killed him, he could have murdered everyone in the room, and likely got away with it. He's not even on the police's radar, until his body shows up in the river. Everyone else involved are suspects. The police would think the crooks went to the house to shake down Emmerich, and a shootout occurred. Who the missing gunman is would be a mystery. Not even Doc and Dix knew about Bannom until they see him at the house, moments before the shooting.

I think she was just going along with Dix. It was pretty clear (to me) that she loved him, though the feeling wasn't mutual. I got the impression that she would have gone along with anything Dix wanted...and she did.

Watta ya lookn here for?

reply

Doll loved Dix. Dix admired Doc. So, Doll wouldn't have turned in Doc.

Had she thought like the OP suggested, Doll's whole life would have been different.

reply

She was mesmerized by the jewels themselves. She had no intention of turning them in. Watch when she holds the diamond to her finger, like a wedding ring. No doubt such a ring seemed like an impossibility to her, and a symbol of what life might be if she could get out of the spiral her life was in--a long lost dream that she once believed in.

reply

She's just repeating what she saw and read in the newspaper, without thinking of the implications. Her mind is not such, that she could contrive a means of turning Doc in, or stealing the jewels. Her recognizing Doc, gets Dix's attention though. Notice how he tells her to mind her own business.
