Robert Shaw look-a-like but that is where the resemblance ends! Charles McGraw is a total embarassment. A real wooden Indian. If this is an example of LA detective, then criminals would always get away with murder!

You're clearly not an aficionado of noir. McGraw is a wonderful noir actot. Tough and no-nonsense. Stiff? Sure he's stiff, ramrod stiff and it suits the role perfectly. Check out The Narrow Margin to see him in another great cop role. And if you don't like him in that then you're a lost cause and film noir isn't really your thing.

Totally agree. McGraw was a great noir actor -- one of the icons of the genre.

Well, no - he's got tremendous presence, providing a strong center for the film, and also pulls off the well written patter with effortless ease. Fine performance, matched by an equally efficient, vicious turn by Talman as the homicidal hoodlum.
