Who's worse: Eve Harrington or Veda Pierce?

Who do you find more despicable, Eve or Veda (from Mildred Pierce)?

Veda Pierce 1

I loved Veda, I thought she was brilliant. Sometimes not as sly about her ways as Eve was, but all the more enjoyable to watch and loath.

Oh, Veda, no doubt about that.

At least Eve was after a position in her profession that she actually deserved (because she WAS a good actress, after all).

Veda... she was equally cold and calculating, but she was just after money and mindless spending, not sparing even (or especially!) her mother's feelings.

reply

They're both horrible but I'll give the edge to Veda. Veda wants a life of ease and luxury. She looks down her nose at her hardworking mother because she is self-made middle class and not a born aristocrat. Eve is self-interested and scheming, but at least she does have real talent and seems motivated to work.

Veda was despicable to everyone that didn't give her what she wanted.

Eve was just ambitious. A little scary the way she hung out at the theater until she got a chance to meet Margo, but still just really ambitious.

reply

Hmmm...I have never seen this Pierce movie we are talking about. Should I? I didn't think you could get much worse than Eve.

Some troll had my "this has got to be the gayest thread on IMDB" post deleted?! You have got to be kidding. I'd love to know on what grounds.

"HOMOPHOBIA"???!!!

You think a comment like "this has got to be the gayest thread" is homophobic?

I am gay, and if that's your idea of homophobic, you've either got a persecution complex, no sense of fun (very ungay of you), or your own problems with internalized homophobia.

reply

Either that or I hate the use of the word "gay" as a synonym for "stupid," regardless of who is misusing the word.

This is an old thread, but as I'm gay also, I'd like to add that when a gay man says something is the "gayest" he is not implying that it is stupid. He's usually implying that it is something that some gay men frequently discuss (such as Bette Davis) or that the manner in which it is being discussed is common among some gay men.

Yes, it is true that some homophobic/heterosexist people use the word [i]gay[i/] in this way (e.g., "That's so gay"), and I would agree that this use of the word is offensive.

Yes,it is a great film, Kate Winslet performed in an updated version.

veda. shes possibly the most vindictive and despicable character of all time.

reply

Eve for the win.

The thing about Veda is that she was just like her mother. But Joan had the Mildred part sanitized so as not to alienate her fans. James M. Cain didn't write about female heroines but femme fatales. And the name of his work was Mildred Pierce (Joan's character), not Veda.

Eve's parents were humble farmers who loved their daughter, so her rapacious ambition and amorality was presented as hers alone.

reply

but eve wasn't evil so much as driven. veda had no real ambitions but to live the high life, which in my opinion makes her infinitely worse. eve can somewhat justify her actions, whereas veda has no explanation for letting her mother take the wrap for murder.

and joan crawford didn't change anything, she didn't have the power to demand that kind of thing- hell she had to screentest in order to get the role, something she hadn't done in well over a decade. if anything was changed, it was down to the director, the producers and the screenplay writer.

Veda!

In the words of Shakespeare (King Lear): How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child.

Remember the most famous line in Mildred Pierce, spoken by Ida (Eve Arden):
Personally, Veda's convinced me that alligators have the right idea. They eat their young.

Margo becomes a more enlightened person after Eve's betrayal so Eve turns out to be a necessary evil and a catalyst for positive change for Margo.

Veda is worse. She's a total monster who'd even outright murder anyone who gets in her way to whatever she wants.

Eve is a total "rhymes-with-witch," of course, but at least she gets her comeuppance, by story's end, when she gets used and manipulated by her OWN "Eve"/parasite. Eve is also in a "they deserve each other" relationship with the odious Addison DeWitt. As stated elsewhere, Eve's rural and decent parents are said to be blameless for how their daughter turned out after she was no longer under their authority and influence. Maybe all these factors will, someday, become enough chastisement for Eve to want to be a better person. There's always that chance for her redemption, at least, since some people DO turn over a new leaf!

Not so with Veda, who's not only a killer but has no love or respect for the nearest and dearest of kith and kin; she's a hopeless case because she's nothing but pure evil incarnate with an empty hole for a soul. You couldn't put ANYTHING past that she-devil; whereas, Eve, for all her faults and as others mentioned, is at least a hard worker with genuine talent who DOESN'T commit murder and frame others for the crime!
