blood, or the lack of it

One problem with a lot of film noire/gangster movies is you see people getting shot, sometimes multiple times, but there's never any sign of blood (or chocolate syrup). Does anyone know why that is? "Wings", which was made in 1927 had people coughing up chocolate syrup or, I'm guessing, bursting a packet of syrup to show as blood coming out of a shoulder.

TWO WORDS: THE CODE...I'M NOT A GUMP LIKE MOST WHO COME IN HERE BUT YOUR QUESTION IS SILLY. YOU DON'T THINK THE HUNDREDS OF MEN, A LOT OF THEM VERY CLEVER, THAT MADE FILMS IN THE GOLDEN AGE DIDN'T ITCH TO GET THIS EFFECT MORE REALISTIC...

I for one don't need to see blood or should I say "fake blood." When a character gets shot I know its dead. I don't need to see "proof." I am by all means not grossed out by the sight of blood like many people. I just don't need to see it.

I don't think it was the code as much as a studio preference. Look at "Flying Tigers" made about 10 years prior to this film and you will see pilots faces spitting up blood.
