competent quasi-noir

I just caught this semi-gem on getTV as part of an Edmund O’Brien mini-noir fest. It’s a tidy little thriller with a B feel and some heavy hitters in the cast but I’m not sure it’s really film noir: despite some of the requisite visuals, 711 has an antiseptic, well-tended feeling that’s antithetical to the gritty noir ethos. O’Brien is solid as usual as the befuddled everyman gone bad, and is offered good support from rest of the cast, especially an oily Otto Kruger, menacing Don Porter, and svelte Joanne Dru. Just short of seven stars, but a solid six.
