How Many Episodes Have Survived

Does anyone know how many episodes of Groucho’s You Bet Your Life have survived?

reply

It has been reported that most of the 400+ episodes survive. During the 70's NBC was gonna trash them but somebody (probably Groucho) saved them and came up with the brilliant idea of repeating them in syndication. It has also been reported that over 100 original 35mm film masters of the series exist. It's a good thing this series was preserved, since mnany shows from back then a long-lost (such as Oscar Levant's show).

I have absolutely no proof, but I doubt that many are still around. Shout factory put a few good ones out on DVD a few years back, then the 2nd volume (because the first one sold fairly well) seemed like an afterthought, even though they were still wonderful to see. Both volumes are now out of print.

400+? I really doubt it.

And I don't believe there were more than about 100 in syndication, and even 'that' number may be high. USA network ran them for a couple of years in the after midnight slot on Cable in the 80's and they didn't have more than a few weeks worth before repeating them over and over.

Actually it was Groucho's grandson who gets most of the credit. It also involves Jack Nicholson, Elliot Gould and Marcel Marceau in a great story told here:
