What happened to waiting guests when they ran out of time?

The mystery guest was almost always the second to last guest, yes? And then there was usually one more guest afterward.

But sometimes the mystery guest stumped the panel and went until the end of the show. I've always assumed that there is a guest waiting in the wings who didn't get to appear.

Were they invited back for the next week's episode? It seems that they should have been... my only concern would be if the guest was from out of town. Would they be expected to go home and then fly back to New York? Does anyone know?

Hopefully they stuck to locals for after the mystery guest in case that happened. I do remember one time they ran out of time and one of the earlier guests had been the back of a pantomime horse. The final guest was supposed to be the front of the horse, but lacking time they brought him out, introduced him and said what he did and that was it. I think he got the $50, but I'm not sure.
