Jackie signed a 2 year contract with Buick for 11 million dollars but, surprisingly, The Honeymooners was #20 in the ratings. Jackie's variety show did much better in the ratings than just The Honeymooners so he cancelled the contract and went back to the one hour variety show. And Jackie was growing tired of The Honeymooners, he was a man who did many characters and he missed doing the variety. Jackie himself said they were running out of good ideas for The Honeymooners. The show has done better in syndication than it did when it aired. Hope that answered your question!

Wow thank you. Thanks makes a lot of sense. I heard Jackie hated to work with kids that's why the honeymooners never had any kids.

He made both Gigot and Papa's Delicate Condition with little girls, and he had two daughters of his own, who both had roles on his variety show when they were little. Jackie only read his lines and rehearsed once, and that would be difficult for children to work with. The writers considered giving the Kramdens a kid (they did adopt a girl in one show) but they always changed their minds because children would have changed everything, and probably not in the way they wanted it to change. There were enough kids in shows in the 50s.

Also this wasn't Ozzie and Harriett or Father Knows Best living conditions. This was a show about the working poor. A child would really upset the comic timing of the show. Not to mention the spirit of it. At the time it was adult comedy.
