Cisco Horses

I have seen cisco ride as many as three different horses in the same tv show. anyone have information on this? I did read that he used one horse for close-ups and had a favorite horse to ride at full gallop. Any truth to this?

reply

Not sure about the three horses, but the official horse name was "Diablo" (Devil)

How about the name of Poncho's horse?

Today, for the first time ever, I watched several episodes of "The Cisco Kid," and right off the bat I noticed the 3 different horses and possibly a 4th, but I'm not positive yet. It's hilarious to watch Diablo switch constantly throughout the show. I love Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, so I'm use to spotting the different Triggers and Bullets. My favorite Diablo is the one that flaps her lips. It looks like she's talking.

I believe Pancho's horse is named Loco.

The book "Horses In The Movies" by H. F. Hintz says that Duncan Rinaldo said that his horse, Diablo, lived to be more than 40 years old. It says that Ralph McCutcheon was his trainer. Pancho's horse was named Lobo.

reply

Sorry, but Pancho's horse's name was "Loco," not lobo.

Loco is right. And Cisco rode that black and white horse which was very unusual. Maybe to compete with the white Silver and the golden palomino Trigger. Always thought Autry rode a strawberry roan. The horse was part of their characters.
Did you know that Carrillo rode horses in the Rose Parade for years. I remember seeing him. Always rode palominos like he did in the series. They would always mention his Cisco Kid series and his famous heritage. Back then horse troups were a part of the parade but dont know if they still are.

Because Cisco's horse was a paint, it was SO obvious it was different horses...one of them had far more white on its face than the other one. I loved this show as a child...but then I loved anything with horses and dogs i it. My mom says I never missed an episode of "Fury" but I don't remember it today. Sad.

I've been watching the show on GRIT-TV for several months ---but sometimes I don't watch it closely --am doing morning chores. But the other day I noticed that Cisco's horse looked like it had a lot of brown, rather than black in it. It got me to thinking that Diablo might have been many horses, so I'm glad you asked the question. On another discussion, someone mentioned the poor color quality of some episodes (perhaps the black color deteriorated to brown with age) but I thought it looked like a different horse.

The one he rides when he's chasing bandits always looks enormous to me. Duncan Renaldo was about 6'2" I think (and probably any stunt double was about the same size.)

Some of the scenes seem to have the duo chasing bandits or being chased by a posse for miles and miles. I often wonder how long or how far a horse can run full-speed like that.

I wonder who made the decision of having the horses coats match their rider's outfits ---but I think it was a smart move.

When I do watch closely, I like to pick out the scenes when the actors are replaced by stunt doubles. Renaldo was in his 50s and Carillo in his 70s for much of the show's run and at least toward the end, neither looks particularly fit.

I watched the show as a kid (was a cowgirl at heart.) I often wonder if I had a crush on Cisco, because I might have a little crush on him now.

For anyone interested, there is a Cisco Kid movie on Amazon Prime that can be watched for free: The Gay Amigo. They didn't mean "gay" in the same way we use it today ---but then Cisco and Pancho never seemed very interested in women, did they? Cisco's outfit in the film looks "south of the border" but is very different from his TV outfit.
