No, BTW, it's not a "pretty bad movie". It has a good script, excellent performances by the leads and is well directed by one of he best directors of golden age Hollywood.
As for Luke, with a mother like that, what woman would to have a relationship with them? He was obviously smitten with Susan Graham's Estrellita but his mother wasn't going to allow him to go very far with a bumpkin singer.
You're confusing Brook Matthews and Luke. Brook Matthews was the attorney with the possessive mother, Luke the leading man who dabbled in ivory tickling and flashbacks.
