there was a scene where Tommy's mother said she would punish him by taking a hairbrush to him (i.e. slapping him). Did such a scene exist?

Yes, she does threaten Tommy with the hairbrush.

Just saw it from TCM. Thought you'd like to know that she also said that she will punish him by not letting him have lunch or dinner...

True, but that line was written by a man, one who must have forgotten the needs of a growing boy. I don't think it's realistic, because I'm sure *most* mothers would not consider depriving their child of TWO meals! That's surely too long for a child to have to fast.
