What's up with the voice track?

This movie has always sounded "tinny" to me - even when I first saw it in the movies.

The voices sound dull, with slight echoes. Even the companion piece released with WITW - "The Story of Ichabod Crane" - has a better-sounding voice track.

I remember the first time I saw this and missed some of the words because the sound was garbled (the "veddy" English accents didn't help - but I could have heard things correctly if the sound was better).

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"
