Sympathy is built up for the Native American, yet he ends up a 'crazy Indian'.
Smilin' domestic help have yet to learn about Reconstruction, yet our 'wildcat gal' is completely liberated...
Oil's ruined the land, yet the corporations suddenly decide, en masse, to curtail drilling for a better future!
An entertaining film all the way around, no matter what your politics may be... the film can't decide itself...

... the film can't decide itself...
Agreed! It keeps raising topical issues for that period and then constantly doubles back on itself.
Sympathy is built up for the Native American, yet he ends up a 'crazy Indian'...
which is a perfect example.

For such an intense drama as this one was, with all of the messages about greed, conservation and such, the ending left me cold. They are standing around the truck, with Tanner still trying to justify his attitude and greed, but Cherokee and her beau start spouting platitudes about the grass and the cattle, blah, blah, blah. I can only imaging if this were to happen today, there would be a ton of lawyers driving up, Jim would be put in prison for a LONG time and nothing would have really changed. Some lessons learned, but the biggest thing there would be the Mercede Benz dealership would have been inundated with new orders from lawyers in Tulsa.
