Bogart does judo!

Bogart doing judo is a hoot. Actually, I'm sure it's a very good look alike stand in, but Bogie fighting in this manner seems so incongruous. There are some obvious rear projection "Tokyo" scenes of Bogie riding in a bicyle taxi that bring a smile to your face, and some farily terrible acitng by some of the supporting actors, but overall, the movie's not bad, though clearly far from his best. The IMDB rating of 6.1 seems about right. I did not recognize that the head bad guy was Sessue Hayakawa of The Bridge on the River Kwai fame. Anyway, it was worth a watch for Bogie fans.

Just watched it on DVD. It's very obvious a stunt man is doing many of the judo scenes.....

He does judo AND speaks Japanese. (Though I wouldn't know if he spoke Japanese well - or maybe a 'stunt' double for that as well). Your right that this movie is not that good and obviously the budget was not spent on the actors but Bogart is, as always, entertaining.

This was the first major hollywood film with scenes filmed in post WWII japan. Some of the scenes from the streets look real to me, but who knows how much is set and how much is japan.. I found this movie entertaining. The love story combined with the corrupt japanese plotline mixed well together I thought. The film climaxes with his daughter (whom he never knew he had..) is kidnapped and he gives his life to save.. The film does have some dull moments... but I dont know why it gets a bad rep..

Id place this film near #10 of my fav. Bogie flicks..

Worth comparing with Cagney's ju-jitsu in Blood on the Sun.

I was thinking the same thing though Cagney didn't have a stunt double.
