She's not ugly. And maybe she doesn't fit the classic Hollywood beauty, but she wasn't that unattractive. They can't all be Ava Gardner.

Definitely NOT ugly. I thought she was attractive in a somewhat exotic sort of way, which actually fit the story: afterall, she was supposed to be a Russian. And the actress who played her was a Czech, of Slavic descent...

The political slant of the movie is quite interesting. Even though it involves a plot to revive a rightwing underground movement, the suggestion is voiced that the Communists are ultimately behind it.

probably undesired, but japan pre war, was allowing some american influences; bars, clubs, etc.. liquor, carousins was being allowed to some extent.. Bogies role as a club owner pre war then american g.i. then this movies setting post war seemed to fit to me.. I liked the back story, and yes the communist inferences..

I watched the movie knowing its close proximity to the end of the war and during the 'occupation' by american forces.. so I found the movie interesting in many aspects..

Saw it for the first time yesterday. Hearing Bogart spout Japanese was worth the price of admission! And I loved that there was actually some location shooting. Very interesting that this predated the Korean War and one could fly Tokyo to Seoul with no interference.

May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?
