Similarities with He Walked By Night (1948)

Spoilers:
I have just watched He Walked By Night (1948) and the final part of the movie is very similar to the ending of The Third Man in which our suspect is being chased through sewers.
Does anyone know if He Walked By Night was a source of inspiration for Carol Reed or is this just pure noir coincidence?

THIRD MAN was obviously in production when HE WALKED BY NIGHT was released, script finished.

Noir Coincidence

Though TM is considered "the greatest" (?) I liked HWBN much better. More tension, mood, suspense and faster pacing.

And WHY was I suppose to be so won over by Harry Slime? His charm and quick wits?

Richard Basehart was more sympathetic.

TM has more of that 'insomnia' effect. And that zither was meh. A TRULY great movie doesn't have to rely on such cloying pretensions and hoary sentiments.

"Pretensions"? I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about. "The Third Man" is based almost entirely on fact. The characters in it are based on real people and the events are real enough. "The Third Man" is revolutionary where "He Walked By Night" - good as it is - is not. Sympathetic? Sympathetic to whom?
