Thieves' Highway is essesntial viewing as is the vast majority of Dassin's work and though this may not be as great as Rififi, most certainly could be argued though, this is a honey from Dassin's preblacklist Hollywood days and I highly recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in film. It's about the cutthroat world of fruit vendors but functions equally well as gripping revenge melodrama, moral fable, and unrestrained condemnation of dog-eat-dog capitalism. There are great performances, it's a fast-paced action film and as a social-conscience narrative, there's a little different twist from other noirs.
