Errol Flynn or Robert Young?

Let's face it who would any woman choose handsome dashing Errol Flynn or fey and decrepit Robert Young. I lost my willing suspense of disbelief when beautiful Greer Garson fell in love with the Young character!

I totally agree that Robert Young was miscast. I read this on Wikipedia: Reportedly, Flynn was originally cast as the bohemian artist Jolyon, and Pidgeon as the stuffy banker Soames. When they met on the set, and discovered that they both were tired of being typecast, they decided to switch roles.

I think that Errol Flynn had no business being Soames. For that matter, Walter Pidgeon was just too warm and kindly to play Soames as well. I think you need someone sort of physically repulsive to play Soames-- Charles Laughton would have been terrific.

Flynn's character, Soames, was handsome but certainly not dashing. He was a humorless, uptight control freak who regarded Irene as a possession. In contrast, Young's character, Philip, was lighthearted and romantic. That being said, I couldn't stand him and didn't care a fig when he got run over by the wagon.
