Does Karin go back to the village? It is kind of an open ending.... For a minute I thought she would end her suffering and jump into the volcano.

Thanks for your reply! It was insightful. I saw this film for the first time a couple days ago, and it has haunted me since then!

She wanted to jump in the volcano but as the movie is about her longing for life, she does not. She realizes she has a child who must live. Yet, she is obviously at a loss about how her duty to her child will be enough to keep her going in a life that offers her nothing.
