Stonehenge

Was the scene filmed at Stonehenge for cinematic effect, or did the army actually conduct gunnery tests there?

Stonehenge is in the middle of Salisbury plain and the whole plain is used for tank and artillery ranges and training grounds. Most of the people you see in that scene were actors, but they did have the support of the Army to do that scene. Although the gun shakes a lot and has lots of other stuff bolted on (hydraulics?), it is a real gun and fires real shells

Stonehenge was open to everyone back then - as long as there was no live firing going on. It was only in the 1970s that English Heritage took control and restricted access. There were too many people visiting the stones and they were showing signs of wear.

Hard to imagine but there was a time when you could gather the boys with a case of beer and just go hang around Stonehenge. You could sit upon the rocks ... brake bottles and just plain old trash the place. Heck it was a perfect place for gunnery practise! Whatever ... just a bunch of old rocks.
