Regarding the Ending (SPOILER WARNING)

SPOILER WARNING

I did use the SPOILER WARNING just in case but if you have already read the reviews then it really isn't a spoiler warning. I was fortunate that the movie came on at a complete surprise and I watched it right away and didn't take time to read the review or look over the cast members like I usually do in order to watch out for cast members that were new or in the twilight of their career in supporting roles. Anyway while watching it I thought I could fortell the ending but I was wrong and this ending really surprised me. Some have thought it was a cop out ending but that it what makes it so great. It is a big surprise and I think that it is great that it ends opposite what one expects.

I enjoyed the ending, too, because it was so unexpected. Sure, it didn't make that much sense, but neither did a lot of the movie to that point. A bit too neat, sure, but so is the rest of the movie, though in a completely different direction.

In fact, the movie seemed so over the top at times playing at the bad girl/doomed lovers formula I was kind of laughing at the inanity of it, thinking that this being my first Douglas Sirk film I was getting the full treatment of just how "rare and bloody" he liked to serve it up, as they said in "Pulp Fiction." With this in mind, the ending felt like Sirk and Sam Fuller laughing at me, and I enjoyed that almost enough to balance out the frustration of sitting through the middle of the film. (I liked the first 20 minutes, until the inane love story kicked in.)

It doesn't surprise me that they actually hated the ending, because they were nothing if not deadly serious from all I've seen and know about them.

That took me by surprise. Not very often that a Noir gets a happy ending.
