Question about the final scene between Mifune and his ex-fiancee...

Only for those who've seen it!

Okay, Misao, the ex-fiancée, comes to visit Kyoji (Mifune) on the day before her wedding. She wants to run away with Kyoji and says she still wants him. He makes as if to kiss her then stops suddenly and then there's a cut to the rain outside. When the scene resumes, clearly something has happened. She's crying and walks out, never to return.

My guess is that he finally told her about his syphilis. Something he should have done much sooner, if you ask me.

Is that what happened? Does anyone want to confirm this or offer an alternate speculation as to what happened between them?
