Photos of Captain Brittles' Family

Early in the film, we see the three photos of Captain Brittles' family on the table in his quarters. The photo on the far right is of a small girl with curly hair who slightly resembles Shirley Temple.

That photo is a reproduction of an authentic picture from the Civil War. The original photo was found on a battlefield between the bodies of a Union soldier and a Confederate soldier. If I remember correctly, it was found on the field after the Battle of Port Republic in June 1862, and nobody ever knew which soldier had been the father of the child, or her identity.

There is a full page reprint of the photo of that little girl in Bell Irwin Wiley's book, "They Who Fought Here." That is how I recognized it even though it is fairly small in the movie scene.

A great factoid. Thanks.
