Headstone: '...Wife of Nathan Cutting Brittles'??

When Brittles is at his family's gravesite, there is a shot of the 3 headstones. The wife's headstone says, "Mary Cutting Brittles Beloved Wife of Nathan Cutting Brittles".
I am assuming that Cutting was the wife's maiden name. If that is correct, why is that included in his name too? Is there a naming convention that I am unaware of?
If Cutting belongs to him as a middle name, it would not have been a middle name for both of them. And, if it belonged to him as part of his surname, it is not hyphenated as we do these days and it is never used elsewhere in the movie.

I always thought there was something odd about that scene but not took years to figure out that it was the Cutting name listed for both Nathan and the wife.
