In Scott Eyman's biography of John Ford, "Print the Legend," he quotes from a letter outlining Ford's ideas for the movie written to the writer James Warner Bellah. In that letter, Ford states that Capt. Brittles' wife and daughters died in a smallpox epidemic (page 330 in the paperback).
