About the ending...spoilers

Did it seem to anyone else that Stoker's girlfriend thought he was just punch-drunk after getting beaten in a fight he lost after he said he won? Her reaction seemed like she was humoring him a bit, and was more happy that he said he couldn't fight anymore. If that's how it was, it makes the ending all the more interesting for me; it's a conclusion, yet two people who love each other have two totally different ideas of what happened.

I think she was his wife, not just his girlfriend. Anyway, I think she knew something really bad had happened to him, but she was happy that he wouldn't be fighting anymore. I think that was established at the beginning, that she didn't want him to fight anymore and this was the reason she didn't go to the fght.

In the movie, she's Stoker's wife. She likely thought he had been beaten in the fight. But, she does see his broken hand and realizes what has happened.

After he told her that they smashed his hand with a brick, she knew.

She figured he was talking non-sense. It was clear to me that she thought he was battered in the ring and broke his hand from the fight.

At the very end, Stoker said that he won...won the fight and that he doesn't have to fight ever again (referring to his broken hand).

She says yes, you won , we both won. Meaning that that she finally got what she wanted which was for him to stop fighting.

reply

Yes, plus she won by sticking with him, instead of leaving or committing suicide as she contemplated on that bridge.
