Is this Secret Garden version where Dickon and Mary are married in the end?

reply

No, not at all.
People are often at their best when things are at their worst.

Hi lingo590
It is a quote spoken by Jeff Bridges in the final scene of "Starman" just before he gets taken up to the mother space ship.
People are often at their best when things are at their worst.

Actually, it's Mary and Colin who marry, Dickon died in a war.

reply

Mary and Colin--the cousins, right?

But is there anyone who's really good? Maybe goodness is just make-believe.

reply

Lol, yes, the cousins..

reply

Actually, in the hallmark version, Mary and and Colin's mothers were friends, not cousins, so it made Mary and Colin not related.

reply

thats the 1987 version

Maybe it was ment to be :)

reply

Is this the one where the parents really die of cholera instead of an earthquake?

reply

yes. I just watched it on TCM and it was terrific.

reply

In the book, it is cholera which is the tragedy that sets everything in motion; it can kill rapidly and is highly contagious.

They may have changed things for later versions - fire, etc. because they thought it made for more dramatic visuals and modern audiences are less and less familiar with the diseases that previous generations knew and feared.
