Loved this movie, but...

...I didn't like the Benny Regazzi character. He was too cartoonish and silly-acting and he was way over the top, IMO. Every time he spoke, he made me think of Boon from Animal House.

Maybe he was there to lighten up an otherwise serious movie, but his character was annoying.

USMC Rifle Platoons are a perfect cross section of society. They all have a Regazzi!

Yes he did look like an Italian Boone.
They had most ethnic types as well. Wasn't there some hebrew spoken.
(Oddly I think Regazi was played by a Jewish actor).

Granted, I'm replying 7 years after your post, but I had to respond to your comment about the character Regazi being played by a Jewish actor. The actor who played Regazi was born "Oswaldo Silvestri Trippilini Rolando Vincenza Castellano" in the town of Agrigento, Sicily. Wally Cassel was his professional name.....couldn't be more wrong about his heritage.

This was made right after the war and, frankly, the speak of that era WAS over-the-top by modern standards.

but his character was annoying

I haven't seen Sands for a few years, so I don't recall Regazzi offhand. The one I thought was annoying in Sands and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon was John Agar's characters. He's insufferable.
