Why leeks?

Canada

One of the funny parts of this movie was the shots of the Welsh soccer (or football for all you Brits) fans wearing leeks pinned to their coats at the match at Twickenham. What is the significance of that? Just curious.

Leeks apparently have been a symbol of Wales for many centuries, probably back to the Roman times and earlier. I don't think anyone is quite certain of the origin, but I understand it's a very major Welsh national icon.

The patron saint of Wales is St. David. He was a monk, and leeks are associated with him because that's one of the things monks cultivate and eat. (They have a lot of minerals and are good for you, besides being easy to raise.) There is also a legend that an important battle against the Saxons was fought in a leek field and the king/general who led the Welsh side asked his men to wear leeks on their helmets for identification. That may be a made-up story, but it is a fact that the leek is the national symbol of Wales like the shamrock for Ireland -- pride of identity, and a sign that they are NOT part of England. Any time there is a festival or holiday, or something where national pride is involved like the rugby match in the film, you'll see lots of people wearing leeks or badges with leeks on them.

I'm all right, I'm alllll right!

It's Rugby, not "Welsh soccer". I'll leave it to a Welshman to tell us of the significance of the leek as a symbol of the Principality.
