Wow, that sucked.

Sorry, but this movie kindo of blew. Those kids were annoying. Also, everything was a bit melodramatic.

No, it did NOT "suck" or "blew". It was written by the great John Steinbeck, author of The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, among others. It might not be on the level of "Night of the Hunter", a great movie also starring Robert Mitchum, but it's well-written and acted.

Grow UP, read Steinbeck's works, esp Travels with Charley, and get a life.

Just because it was written by John Steinbeck does not make it great. Steinbeck could have written a brilliant screenplay, but there is more to a movie than just a the writing. Also, I was not commenting on what other works John Steinbeck wrote, I was commenting on this movie. I have read some of Steinbecks works, among others.

Stick to the subject at hand. The children were a bit annoying and melodramatic. The subplot about the father and his father in law seemed out of place. The acting was a bit too stoic at times, too over the top at others.

Yes, well said: "A nice little film, but nothing special." I first saw this in the third grade and saw it again at 22. It's one of those nostalgic films you like to watch once in a blue moon.

I really like this film. It's not a great Steinbeck adaptation like Grapes of Wrath or anything, but I like it for what it is. Always love Robert Mitchum.

And considering that child actors are always annoying, I didn't think that this one was too bad. Go watch Shane, and then the kid in The Red Pony will seem like a soft-spoken angel.

Although the actors connected well with one another the story didn't hold much of my interest due to its melodramatic approach. Some elements were underdeveloped and rushed such as the subplot of the parent's weakening relationship, it just did not feel rightly placed within the film as a whole.

Don't say "it blew." That's certainly your opinion, but that doesn't mean it's intrinsically bad or that other people don't like it. "Blowing" is in the eye of the beholder.
